Abiad was elected to the Adelaide City Council in 2010. He has chaired the Finance & Corporate Governance Committee for the City of Adelaide and served on the Rundle Mall Management Board and on the Development Assessment Panel for the City of Adelaide. He is currently the city's deputy mayor.〔
